I was called from a 202-222-2222 number from Washington D.C. I was told that because I had a record of paying my bills on time, had no bankruptcy, and no criminal record for the last 6 months that I had qualified for this grant from the Federal government. It was for $9K and did not have to be paid back. They gave me an approval number along with a phone number (509-588-7215) to call in order to claim my money. They asked if I wanted it deposited to my checking account, credit card, or provided through a money gram. I told them through a money gram. Before call this number, I did a reverse number lookup and found the number was in Benton City, WA. I also requested and paid for a report on the phone number. Everything came up unknown (i.e., no business name, no business address, no e-mail address, etc.) I also researched on line and found some similar scams. I thought I would call the number just to confirm it was a scam. When I called, I was given the same information as the original caller gave me with regard to the money, etc. He asked for my approval number and verified the personal information (e.g., name, zip code, age, and employment status) that was previously verified by the original caller. (These people are smart enough not to ask for your SSN and other private information.)Then he said he would send my information to a New York bank so they could wire the money to my nearest money gram location. I would need to provide a valid picture ID when I claimed the money gram. He also stated that I would have to provide a $250 Western Union money gram as a deposit for the grant money; so, when I got the grant money I would receive this money back - a total of $9,250.00. When I told him I would not do this as I had read up on this type of scam on the internet, he hung up on me. During my conversations with both men, they mentioned the Federal Government and Treasury Department (where the money was coming from then it turned in to a bank in New York) to add some supposed creditability to their call. After reading previous complaints, I can see these people are getting a little more sophisticated than some of the complaints I read. BEWARE. BE VERY AWARE OF THESE PEOPLE. DON'T FALL FOR THIS SCAM!!!!!!!Show more...
