Someone have accessed my COX account. I received a phone call on 12/05/14 with an offer to upgrade and lower my monthly bill if I paid for one full year up front. The person had all my information, including my last 4 numbers of Social Security.
He knew exactly how much I pay/month and what speed my Internet is. All information was exactly as when I have talked to COX at other times.I called the number back a couple of hours later to make sure it was a COX number.
Everything sounded exactly as when I have called COX at other occasions. Same touch tone options etc. A different person took my call. I was put on hold and same music was payed as when calling COX. Then I was told to get a Vanilla Network Reload card, pay $360.00 for one year and call back with the number on the back of the card. They even gave me a "confirmation number" after my payment! Told me I will receive a package from them confirming my new upgrade and that my account was paid in full for one year.
After paying, I called another number to COX to confirm my payment. I was told that no such promotion existed. The associate told me that no one could have hacked in to their system since it is internal. The information the caller had, had to come from someone inside COX, either directly doing the scam, or working with some one, giving out customers account information. I was told by this COX associate that they would call me back same day. Did not hear from them so I called again 5 hours later. Had to tell my story one more time and was then told to call their Fraud Dep. I did so and left a message. No one has called me back 24 hours later.
