I was looking for some dishes online that were discontinued several years ago. I have purchased pieces of the set here and there and one day I found a 27 piece set of the pattern I'd been searching for on a website called LiveAuctioneers.com. The 'auction house' was Hutter White LLC, out of Tampa FL. There was a date listed for the auction. All I had to do was register with the LiveAuctioneer website and and sign up to be a bidder for the auction. I did this easily. On the date of the auction, I logged in and had to wait for my 'lot' to come up. It took over an hour but finally it came up. I had already placed an absentee bid on the item and within seconds I won the item. I immediately emailed them and asked them for an invoice. When I received it I paid immediately. Days later I emailed them and asked when I could expect to receive my items. No reply. I asked again a few days later and received a vague reply that as per my invoice, I had to arrange my own packing and shipping of the items I won. I thought this was quite odd, but I said okay. I guess I missed that on the invoice. I asked for instructions on how I was to do this (as I've never been asked to do this before and I've purchased hundreds of items online). I received a few more vague replies reiterating that I had to arrange my own packing & shipping and they gave me the phone numbers of a few shippers I could use. However, no one would tell me what I was supposed to do. Was I supposed to call these shippers and just tell them I won an auction online and they'd know? What specific info did I need to give them? Where would the 'shipper' be picking up from? It took a while but finally a woman named Lisa answered me and told me to call one of the shippers, give them my lot number, their company name & address (Hutter White Auctions LLC, 3418 W. Kennedy Blvd in Tampa, 33209), and possibly a copy of my invoice if requested. So I called the first shipper on their list and got a personal voicemail (no company name identified). I didn't leave a message. I called second shipper on their list and reached a business. I spoke to a man and explained why I was calling. He seemed familiar with Hutter White, and asked for my lot number. He said he would call (them I guess?) and find out the weight/size to determine packing & shipping costs and would call me back. He called me back 20 minutes later and said that it would be $300.00 total to ship this dish set to me. I paid $15.00 for this set and while I understand that it's dishes/cups/china, I thought the packing and shipping fee sounded ridiculously high. I told him that I've ordered plenty of china online before (50 piece china set from William Sonoma, 12 piece crystal wine set from Macys, large glass lamps from Neiman Marcus, etc etc...).... and NEVER been charged anything close to this in shipping (and never been charged for packing - ever, anywhere). And as a side note, the materials used for 'packing' are not expensive. It's foam, cardboard and perhaps paper. The bulk of what I was being charged was shipping. From FL to MA? I said no. Not normaI. I then called the phone number for Hutter White and reached a v/m for LiveAuctioneers.com. I left a message expressing my extreme displeasure with this and requested my order be cancelled immediately & refunded. I also said the same thing in an email to Lisa. That was two days ago. No reply as of yet.
I was fine with paying the auction house % fee. I was fine with paying for shipping and I was even ok with paying for packing..though I found that very odd. However, after receiving the price quote , I feel this is a huge scam. At most the packing and shipping should have been between $35-45.00..and that's still high.
Needless to say, that is the last time I will ever use an online auction.
refund of my money.
I don't recommend them
I filed a complaint with Paypal. They agreed the shipping and 'packing' fees were exorbitant. They gave Hutter White 10 days to respond. They did not respond. Paypal sided with me, and refunded my money. Don't use these people unless you want to pay extremely high shipping and packing rates.
Company is pretending to have not received my voicemail messages, my emails. Still unresolved.
