SCAM ALERT: SALEMOWERS.COM and GEXCARGO.COM
I was looking online for a good price on a zero turn mower and found salemowers.com. Their online catalog was very extensive; almost any brand of lawn equipment was offered. It looks legitimate. The cost for the mower I’m interested in was $600 less than anyone else and offered free shipping. I was already thinking that this was too good to be true but decided to play along to see if it was legitimate. This so-called business is operated out of Jakarta, Indonesia.
I placed the item in the shopping cart and went to checkout. The purchase options were via credit card or PayPal. I decided to use PayPal due to the purchase protection they offer. Surprisingly, the sale went through and I was returned to the seller website. This was followed by an email thanking me for the purchase and stating that a tracking number would be sent when the item is shipped.
The following day there was another email with a link to the shipping company at gexcargo.com. I went to this site to check on progress using the tracking number provided. It showed that the item was on a wood pallet at the Jakarta, Indonesia airport pending shipment. The status went from “shipment submission” to “In process” to “approved (customs checking).”
Then things start getting interesting. I received an email from salemowers.com asking for my mobile phone number. I sent this and soon received a call from Raga Gapilau. In very broken English, he said there was something wrong with the payment and he had refunded the payment to PayPal. He asked me to choose another form of payment and reorder. I checked my PayPal account and sure enough, he did refund the full amount. I went back to their site to reorder via PayPal, but this time PayPal would not accept the payment. Now, I’m very, very suspicious.
Later in the day, the guy calls me again asking me if I reordered. I told him that PayPal would not work. He asked me to send a bank draft. I told him that the only reason I made the purchase was that it was offered through PayPal and that was the only way I would purchase. He again suggested the bank draft. I told him no way.
A few days passed and the gexcargo website did not show any upgrade in shipping status, this despite the fact that they had told me that shipping would take 7 days. Now very, very, very suspicious, I began to investigate them further. I checked to see who owns the salemowers.com website domain and found it was owned by rumaweb.com. Interestingly, when I check on gexcargo.com, who do you think owns that domain? Right… rumaweb.com. The shipping company is a fake site set up to look like a legitimate shipping operation. There is nothing being shipped and the shipping status never changed. I went online and checked their tracking number. No shipper anywhere recognized that number.
Bottom line: This is a total scam operation. Here is how it works:
A buyer makes a purchase using a credit card or PayPal.
The seller later refunds the money in order to keep in good graces with the CC company or PayPal. He doesn’t want his account flagged and shut down.
The seller attempts to get the buyer to send a money order or bank draft instead.
If a money order or bank draft is sent, the buyer soon finds out that his money is gone and there is nothing ever shipped. Since they have a fake shipping site, they can make it appear that it is a legitimate operation, and the buyer is scammed!
WARNING - THIS IS A SCAM OPERATION – DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!!!
I would like simply to warn others so they don't lose any money
This company supposedly sells lawn equipment. On their website they offered a zero turn mower at significantly less that it would cost in the US. Since they offered PayPal, I decided to give it a try. The transaction went through PayPal Credit for $2,400. Salemowers.com sent an email confirming the purchase and later an email with a link to the shipper gexcargo.com. The next day, I received an email asking for my mobile phone number and telling me that they had refunded my money to PayPal. When the guy called me, he said that there was some problem with the payment and he needed me to reorder using a different payment method... he suggested a bank draft. I told him that the only reason I ordered is because of PayPal and would try again. PayPal would not allow a reorder. The guy called me the next day asking if I had reordered. I told him that until his refund is confirmed in PayPal I would not reorder and would only use PayPal. Now I'm very suspicious.
The shipping website link showed the shipping status from 'received' to 'customs approval', but would move no further after four days; ie. nothing ever shipped. I checked the domain ownership of each website. It turns out that the gexcargo.com and salemowers.com are owned by rumaweb.com! They have a fake shipping website to lead their victims believe that the item is being shipped. I checked the tracking number and no reputable shipping company recognized the number.
The scheme is to use the low price and PayPal (or credit cards) then refund due to an "unknown" issue, and get you to send a bank draft. If you did this, you would be out $2,400 and not receive the shipment and there would be no way to recover your money. To keep in good with PayPal, they refund the money and are still able then to use it to draw in victims.
I would like others to know about this scam and be able to avoid it
