I paid for a resume update, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, and phone consultation. The first writer I was paired with didn’t seem to grasp my professional experience. Before I could get anywhere with him, the working period closed and I never received my phone consultation. I reached out to support and they were helpful by connecting me to a second writer. Unfortunately, a technical glitch in their system resulted in my receiving the old files, not new. I setup a phone consultation, but the writer never called. I finally got updates and then sent back feedback (within 2 days) and never heard back. Support now says I need to pay more to get what I already paid $399 for and didn’t receive.

They assigned someone who was in sales to redo my resume as I am in sales. Not only did I have to correct the grammar, especially word tenses, but he added qualifications that don't have anything to do with my industry. Such as "improving workplace safety :when I've never worked anywhere where safety was a concern. I make my living on the phone in professional offices. Worst of all, he listed one of my areas of focus as "Performance Improvement" which; anyone in sales knows that's the program they put salespeople on right before they're fired for poor performance. I do not feel that a professional job was done on my resume an based on the grammar, I really wonder if English is even this person's first language. I don't mean to sound prejudice but I simply expected to not have to correct the grammar on my professionally done resume.

I paid almost $350 AUD for their top tier resume writing service. My first draft was missing information and none of the questions I asked had been addressed. Brought up with writer and received a stock-standard (seems like cut and paste) response. At this point, I sent an email to support asking for a refund and tried to work with the writer to get something. My final resume was littered with typos and grammatical errors and the language used was outdated and cold. My LinkedIN profile started every job description off with the SAME sentence! I finally got a response from support but they have been stonewalling me since May. The site guarantees satisfaction and I am far from! I have a useless resume, one that I could have written better myself if I was drunk, and they refuse to refund or even offer a partial refund. The emails seem like cut-and-paste answers designed to deflect and confuse.

If you are looking to have a resume written, re-written, or a LInkedIn profile updated - please look elsewhere. I contracted TopResume to do a resume update and an LinkedIn profile update. The first pass they did at the resume was amateurish. Horrible formatting, fonts and font sizes intermixed, and showed no concept of how to present the material for my background. After complaining and waiting over a week, they finally assigned another writer. Based on the delays and poor quality work, I requested that they cancel my order. Their response was that they couldn't cancel because they already delivered some work. They did nothing on the LinkedIn profile, and the draft they gave me on the resume was completely unusable. Find a writer that you can make a personal connection with and talk via phone. TopResume doesn't, they only communicate via email.

Do not use TopResume. The only positive part of my experience was the resume/CV assessment that I received for free. Here is a list of issues I had with the "service": - visually unappealing - incredibly bad grammar and refusal to make corrections (e.g., writer refused to remove periods at the end of bullet points. She argued that they aren't incomplete sentences because of imaginary pronouns and "this is how you write a professional resume") - position descriptions written in word salad that will misrepresent your experience and put you in an indefensible position if questioned during interview - low attention to detail (e.g., mixing experience between positions, EVEN AFTER being corrected in previous reviews/feedback) - very unsatisfactory customer service (writer was very argumentative with me on several points, even minor ones) - list goes on and on and on... At the end of the day, after 3-4 revisions, what I received is less capable than my current resume. I have little confidence in using it until I do significant revisions myself, which is beside the point of the service. This business relies on the 'all sales are final' clause and are unlikely to deliver a quality product, from my experience.

Oh My God...I got this EXACT same reply from them!! Wow. And I thought they were going to be actually serious people. Nope, seems they are attempting to "automate" the review and rewrite process. Sometimes I despise tech people who think that automation can do everything. We ain't there yet. So glad I researched more!!

This is so funny -- I got the EXACT SAME REVIEW as you. Same language, same "recommendations," same everything. (Coincidentally, I'm also a designer.) After realizing a robot reviewed my resume I was no longer interested. I could tell because the excerpts "Katie Warren" pulled from my resume were totally botched, Frankenstein sentences that a human wouldn't have read.

I wish I had seen the other reviews before paying for an executive level package with TopResume. The free "assessment" appeared helpful. I already had a good resume, but wanted it optimized for ATS systems and thought it would be more helpful to have a "professional" service do that for me. But after waiting nearly two weeks (they promise to deliver a first draft within one). I was appalled at the product. The cover letter was written so poorly, including sophomoric language and several grammatical and syntax errors, and failed to provide any relevant or meaningful content. They didn't even spell my name correctly (and there are only five letters to get right). It was clear the writer knew nothing about my field, and apparently cannot use Google to learn anything useful. The resume listed some generic sentences, and then left out nearly half of my experience and accomplishments. I complained and asked for a refund, but they refuse to provide one. The writer acknowledged how challenging this was because my own resume was already "really well written". Yet he did not bother to include any of that content on his own attempt. Instead, he sent a draft that was so generic and poorly constructed, that if used, it would destroy any chance of getting anywhere except the trash bin. It was so bad, I doubt they have a writer on staff who could produce something acceptable (or they would have assigned them in the first place). DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME!

Beware their "free resume assessment". As a designer, I use multiple different formats for my resume, depending on who's asking. TR provided me with an assessment, pointedly critical, which I largely expected based on what I submitted. I wanted to see if I could better impress their bots, so I signed up a second time (using a different email address) and submitted a completely rewritten and redesigned resume specifically targeted to ATS. Unsurprisingly, I received the exact same review, under a different "name"; though still citing all the same issues. Among the more absurd were that "I found your design to be visually uneven." Now my first resume was purposely uneven, because I was testing them for that specific feedback, so I expected that. The second was meticulously balanced for both visual readers and ATS scanners. And again, I am a professional graphic artist; I am fully aware of how to set, kern, lead and track type and, I'd venture to say, am just as, if not more, adept at doing so than whomever TR is "employing" to that end. (Though, they are more than likely simply using a template and not actually designing anything.) My second head scratcher was that "You should consider using a few more bullet points to increase the impact to the employer." ROTFLOL. I have 19 separate bullets in my skills section alone. NINETEEN. I also used bullets when listing the achievements under each job, bringing the total amount to 34 bullets in document. Third, my "reviewer" offered that: "When I read your resume, I did not find the kind of compelling language that would bring your work to life. Instead, I saw many passive words and non-action verbs." That's funny because when I did the rewrite, I made sure that every single accomplishment statement began with a recommended "action word" taken off a comprehensive list provided by The Muse. Every single one. And a few contained more than one. And, certainly, the language was both appropriate and well structured. I know because I took much of the language and syntax from OTHER professional resume writers. Ultimately, I found TR's free reviews to be a waste of time; they are simply canned responses provided by bots and they likely give the same, or nearly the same, summation to every resume. Of course, a REAL test would be to pay for one of TR's custom resumes, then submit it back to them and see how they review themselves. My bet is that they will find all the same common "issues". To underscore my point, I'll leave a copy of my bulleted skills section — the one TR insisted needs more bullets. To be clear — this is not the best graphic design, but a design aimed at fitting the profile recommended for ATS. The font is 10 - 11 point Calibri (regular and bold), which is the default font included with MS Word. And the section separators (lines and colors are supposedly OK for ATS) and column layout were all created directly in the word processing program. So there were no fancy bells and whistles or creative design elements that could have, or should have, confused the computer. I'll leave all you humans to judge its readability for yourselves.

I too got scammed by this SOB's and they only refunded me half of my full pay and that's because I used AmEx. Pass the word out and please fill a complaint with BBB in NY. The more we all file formal complaints the better we'll all be. This company is using idiots to write our resumes. They can't spell nor do they do a full type and error check. Plus they make up positions instead of asking what we really do. Full SCAM Co.

I submitted my resume to TopResume service for a free preview and received a reply this week. Let me start out by saying that my gut-instinct told me that the overview that I received was setting me up for more sales on their end. I am a suspicious person by nature and I also have a high intelligence for reading people. I am not saying that TopResume isn't a legit and worthwhile company, but one cannot write resumes to cover every possible nuance to please every employer which I gathered from my review. Is the job market competitive? Yes, but you have to be honest in your resume, state the work you've actually done, and display knowledge, skills, and abilities. Being a "word-smith" turns me off and turns many employer's off too and I got the feeling that had I turned my resume into a warm and fuzzy, feel-good novel, my reviewer would have liked it much better. But in my career and field, that is a sure way to get a resume thrown into the trash bin. The first thing mentioned about my resume was its size and that it needs to be condensed. That is impossible because of the lengthy career that I have had in my field. In addition, I have already condensed it and tried to focus on actions, knowledge, skills, and abilities. No warm and fuzzy anecdotes; just facts. Next, I am told that I have no management experience. Now this comment floored me. Had the reviewer actually taken the time to read my background, he would have seen that I have had years of program management experience. However, here is the key as to why he stated that I haven none. In my "Management Score", I received a zero and this is because that in my job titles, not one of them have the word "Management" listed. When I hover my cursor over the score number, it states, "Your management score is calculated from position titles". Really? So if I lie and BS in my resume and put the word, "Manager" in every job title, I will get a nice, fat score? No thanks. I don't lie in my resume. Now, have I personally managed automotive sub-assemblies for Chrylser and Lear? Have I managed staff and production employees? Have I managed $150.0M governmental funding programs for military vehicles three years in a row? Yes. And all of this is mentioned in my resume, so why did I get a management score of zero? Next, my reviewer states that employers use an Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). The ATS Score given me for my "Knowledge and Learning" environment is 97%, but "Common-End User Software" is only 0.91? Huh? I cannot even understand how those scores were assessed but they are completely incorrect. Finally, the "Less-Weighted Skills" are those that entail my entire career such as management systems, engineering, statistics, analysis, financial reporting and management, audits, documentation and records control, systems knowledgement, control plans, directorate of programs and teams, etc. As Marcus stated here in a post, "it's all smoke and mirrors". I have been complemented on my writing skills and my resumes so I will stick with my own abilities than to rely on someone who knows nothing of my career background and skills. I think that TR has its place, but one has to be very prudent and realize that their perspective, analysis, and re-drafting of your resume may not be what you are looking for and what an employer is looking for also.

With a couple of colleagues, we sent CVs to TopResume asking for a review. The CVs contained inconsistencies that a human can identify in a second, but that are very hard to be found by a machine (e.g. a 60 years old person with a 20 years old picture) and... guess what? Nobody noticed about the inconsistencies, focusing on suggestions like "you should use .docx instead of .doc" or similar stuff. I've had my resume done professionally several times and this was by far my worst experience and the most expensive. I'm at an executive level and I thought it needed a brush up. First I was never contacted by anybody. When I asked where my resume was, I was told it was going to be late. Then I asked again and was told the person working on it was very busy. It finally arrived and was essentially my old resume reformatted. I thought I'd give it a go - I have applied for as many jobs matched my target and geography... When I went back to seek the guarantee of a job (60 days and I tried for 7 months), I was told I should have been applying for 10+ jobs a week. There are not 10+ jobs in my geography a week to even apply for even if I wanted to. I was sent a link with "career advice"... that's rich... Advice from people that don't know me, never took the time to even talk to me about writing about me! This company is essentially a scam and not professional. I should have read more about their terrible reputation before I tried them. Do not waste your time, energy or money on this firm. I'm reporting them to BBB and having my credit card company reverse the charges.

I don't usually write reviews or complaints but I just want to help people like me who wanted a professionally written resume. Jennifer J wrote my resume. She misspelled the word instructor and she submitted the resume without correcting the errors that I pointed out. The staffing agency told me that the skills page needs to be rewritten and the second page is completely useless. I now have to redo my resume and I cannot get a refund because I only purchased the $149 or basic package. I seriously wasted money on this. Please hire writers who can spell or are more thorough with their work.

TopResume - Smoke and Mirrors TopResume is a owned by Talent, Inc in New York, the same company that owns JC Resume, Resume2hire, RezBiz, Reszoome, Guaranteedresume, CVNow and CareerPerfect. They take your order and farm it out to freelance writers. Keep in mind that a freelancer will get paid as little as $20 so if you think you will get a $200 value resume for the $20 paid to the freelancer, then think again. You never know what you will get to write for you, including the possibility of a freelancer from outside the US. Some customers have indicated that they went through 2-3 writers and still weren't satisfied. Read reviews from employees who have worked for Talent, Inc. https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-RezBiz-RVW10031045.htm The trick to this business is to not to list a telephone number or address while constantly changing names when the reviews get bad. Talent, Inc. is located in New York city, while the Yelp review page for JC Resume is in San Francisco (with a disconnected telephone number). If the hidden reviews are counted, JC Resumes has nearly 100 1-star reviews. http://www.yelp.com/biz/jc-resumes-san-francisco Interestingly enough, JC Resume's BBB page is in Estero, Florida where the BBB indicates they don't answer their telephone or reply to their mail so the BBB has stopped taking complaints. http://www.bbb.org/west-florida/business-reviews/resume-service/jc-resumes-in-estero-fl-90278464 The bottom line is that if you don't need much work, you will overpay for your resume. If you need a lot of work, you are taking your chances because freelancers get paid the same for a hard resume as they do an easy resume and in order to get the work done, little time is spent on the hard piece. Common complaints include cut and paste jobs, wrong information and sometimes even the wrong resume sent on completion. In today's world it is easy to create a fancy website and make lots of promises, especially if you do not provide telephone support. If you buy a resume from a service that does not deliver on promises, contact your credit card company to initiate a disputed charge and post a report where you you save others the trouble you have experienced.
